Is the box truck business profitable?

Checked October 2026

The short answer: yes — for the driver whose truck runs most days at rates above his real cost per mile. It is not profitable for the driver who buys the truck first and hunts work second, pays new-authority insurance on a truck that sits, and takes any load at any price to feel busy. The business is a volume-and-doors business wearing a trucking costume.

The math that works

From our worked example: a truck that runs 20 days a month at an average kept margin of about $0.68 a mile over 8,000 miles keeps roughly $5,400 a month before taxes and the driver's own pay. That is a living, and it comes from unglamorous parts: a sound used truck (payment $900, not $1,800), insurance shopped hard, and five or six companies whose lists he is on. Nothing in that paragraph is luck.

The math that sinks

The sinking version also has three parts. A nearly new truck at a payment the slow weeks cannot carry. First-year insurance at the top of the band — $1,000 to $2,085 a month — priced against a truck that runs eight days. And one customer: one company, one dispatcher, one board, so one bad week anywhere becomes a bad month everywhere. Add loads taken below cost "to keep moving," and the truck is a machine for moving money from the driver to everyone else.

The three habits of the drivers who make it

They count all the miles. Every rate is judged against the full run and their own cost stack — our rate-per-mile guide gives the method. They keep many doors open. The week never depends on one company's mood; when one list goes quiet, three others are warm. They keep a reserve. Net-30 pay and weekly bills do not match; the reserve is the bridge, and the drivers who treat it as untouchable survive the gap that kills the rest.

The honest warning

Profitability pages love the top month. Ask instead about month four, when the freight is thin and the insurance renewal lands. If your numbers still stand in month four — payment, insurance, reserve intact — you have a business. If they only stand in the best month, you have a hope. Build for month four.
