How to get local cargo van loads
Checked October 2026
The short answer: local cargo van loads come from companies in your own city — auto parts and supply distributors, warehouses, food and medical distributors, pharmacies and labs that move their own goods, and delivery apps. Almost none of it is posted on a load board. It is handed to drivers the company already knows, which is why the way in is a phone call and a visit, not a subscription.
Why you cannot find local loads on a board
Load boards were built for freight that crosses the country. A board can show you a load leaving your state, but the daily bread of local work — the morning lab route, the parts run across town, the same-day business delivery — is arranged inside companies, on their own driver lists. Drivers who run these routes say it straight: most local companies never post openings at all and hire on a phone call. If you are only looking at boards, you are looking where this work is not.
The local doors, one by one
Distributors and supply houses. Every city has parts distributors, electrical and plumbing supply houses, and food distributors running goods out to shops, job sites, and stores all day. They keep lists of cargo van and sprinter van drivers and call down the list. Getting on the list is the job.
Medical and pharmacy goods. Labs, hospitals, and pharmacies move their own specimens and supplies on fixed daily routes, and medical supply distributors run the same kind of routes with their own stock. The routes are steady, the freight is light, and these businesses need reliable cargo vans more than they need cheap ones. Our medical contracts guide covers how that work is won.
Parts and supply runs. Auto parts stores, building suppliers, and distributors run small goods to shops and job sites all day. A company that ships small things in small vehicles is a company that needs cargo vans — a rule of the road worth remembering when you look at any business in your city.
Warehouses and distribution buildings. Distribution buildings — a distributor's own warehouse, or a warehouse company that holds other businesses' goods and ships them out — put route work out to cargo van owners. The building in your city is the door, not a head office in another state.
Apps. Delivery apps give local jobs one by one. They are real, they pay per job, and they are a fine way to fill a slow day. They are a poor foundation, because every driver in the city sees the same job at the same second. Our apps guide gives the honest picture.
How a local driver actually gets steady
The drivers with full weeks did a simple thing the crowd skips. They made a list of the companies in their city, reached the person who signs up drivers at each one, and got on every list they could. One company calling twice a week is not a living. Six companies calling is.
